This last set of collages was the most difficult yet. I fell behind again, but managed again to catch up. I almost quit around the mid-80s but figured if I was that close, I HAD to keep going.
Does it feel good? Yes, definitely. I am happy that I did the 100 Days Project. I learned a lot about collage, about managing my time, about the extent of my inspiration and ideas. When I started, I worried that I would run out of ideas part way through, but that hasn’t happened. If anything, I have more ideas yet to do!
The hardest day was Day 100! I wanted to tie the project together, despite it having wandered all over the place during the other days. I’m happy with my solution. What do you think?
Project constraints
My initial plan had been simple: make a collage each day in a little 8.5 x 5.5 wirebound sketchbook. Throughout the project, however, I added other constraints. I decided to keep my supplies to a minimum: my paper stash fit in a 9×12-inch envelope, which allowed it to be portable so that I could take it between home and studio easily. I worked only from that stash, with infrequent (and carefully considered) additions of a leaf or button. Those additions had to be very very necessary, only if I just couldn’t find the right item in my stash. Around Day 70, I pulled in a batch of painted paper left over from the The Sentinels 1 and 2.
Keeping my supplies simple really helped make decisions each day.
What’s with the hand prints?
I had an exhibit at the Cleveland Botanical Garden recently, and had planned to make a “palm” tree (ha ha) so I photocopied my hands a bunch of times in different sizes. I didn’t make that tree, so the prints have been sitting on my worktable. Couldn’t let them go to waste. Man, I have wrinkly hands.
What’s next?
I am taking a break for a week to recharge, then it’s back in the studio. I am glad I chose a small size for this project, but I’m eager to work bigger and include other materials, such as paint, graphite, ink, and other mark making tools. And 3D: I want to fold, bend, curl, crumple stuff.
Thanks for sticking with me and for all the cheers along the way!

Here’s a video flip through of the sketchbooks:
The artwork from this project is now available for sale. I am removing the pages from the sketchbooks and mounting them on wood panels so that they look nice, and can be hung without framing. See my Etsy shop: https://lifeneedsart.etsy.com
