All Buttoned Up is a series of small abstract collages that include altered magazine pages, buttons, and thread. Some remind me of desert landscapes, others make me think of weathered walls and windows. And somehow #9 ended up completely different! But that’s ok.
Buttons have been on my mind lately. I wanted to use some in artwork, but not make them too specific. These aren’t pushable buttons or hot buttons.
The buttons came from my family’s button box, handed down from my grandmother to my mother to me. I sorted through them, choosing rather ordinary shirt buttons mostly. A few larger ones and some made of shell snuck in, but for the most part, they are simple everyday buttons.
It seemed important to use regular buttons, not fancy ones.
It felt very satisfying to stitch them to the artwork, making sure each button was securely attached right where it needed to be.
Each image is 5-1/2 inches x 3-1/2 inches. The backgrounds are pieces of heavier paper that I covered in torn pieces of an old encyclopedia which a friend gave me. I glued each collage to a background to give it added strength, and because that little bit of text around the edges makes me happy.
Overall, each piece is 6 x 4 inches. Postcard sized.
These pieces are all sold.
